Getting a fastening to work takes more than a quick tug. Your child has to hold it steady, line up the parts and try the movement again. A busy board gives them space to practise those steps without the rush of getting out the door.

How it helps

• Practise the fastenings they meet when getting dressed. Everyday fastenings give children a place to rehearse movements they recognise from clothes and bags.

• Build finger control with zips, buckles and buttons. Holding one part while moving another gives both hands a job and encourages careful finger movements.

• Work through everyday tasks one small step at a time. Start with one familiar fastening. Show the movement slowly, then give your child time to try independently.
